We see the wounds of colonialism all around us in the landscape – open pit mines, oil fields, and urban spaces where more-than-human relations have been drowned in concrete.

Imagining how a mine might be reclaimed and the technologies needed to support life within this environment challenges the common assumption that these spaces are irredeemable and unrecoverable. Informed by Chickasaw and Anishinaabe understandings of environment and relationship with non-western technologies/systems, we can create the possibility of a gentle and good future.

This map explores a speculative future ecology of the Malartic Mine. What happens when you pour love into an open pit, and treat our kin who have been weaponized as ‘resource’ as kin?

In accordance with this, we aimed to avoid rendering non-human beings resource by organizing information based only on utility, thus breaking apart relationalities. Instead, the map highlights kinship. Clicking one object on the map might open up a network of relations. Try clicking on items to see what relationships you can find!
